Jim McCarter
BioSTL Senior Vice President, Senior Managing Director, BioGenerator Ventures
James McCarter, MD PhD joined BioSTL as a Senior Vice President. He will lead BioGenerator Ventures as its Senior Managing Director, where he will head our investment team and drive new ventures in bioscience innovation for the region.
Jim brings a range of valuable experience as an entrepreneur, investor, and industry leader — across St. Louis’ bioscience strengths in medicine, healthcare, and agriculture —most recently at Abbott Laboratories and at Virta Health, where he helped develop groundbreaking technologies in health and wellness.
Jim is no stranger to our community. In 1999 he founded Divergence, a pioneering ag biotech start-up and early success story for St. Louis entrepreneurship. Upon Divergence’s acquisition by Monsanto in 2011, Jim joined the Monsanto Growth Ventures team making investments in emerging ag technology. From 2013 to 2019, Jim served as Senior Entrepreneur in Residence with BioGenerator, mentoring entrepreneurs and identifying investment opportunities.
Jim’s return marks a pivotal moment for BioSTL as we continue to elevate St. Louis’ leadership in bioscience. His deep commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship, along with his dedication to the St. Louis community, will significantly strengthen our mission of building a world-class innovation economy and addressing critical challenges in human health and agriculture.
